Located in the commune of Pierrefonds, Château de Pierrefonds is a unique blend of medieval military architecture and 19th-century Romanticism. Originally built between 1393 and 1407 by Louis I, Duke of Orléans, the castle was designed as a formidable fortress. After falling into ruin for over two centuries, it was purchased by Napoleon I in 1810 and later restored by the famous architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc under the commission of Napoleon III.

The château’s exterior remains true to its medieval roots, featuring towers, ramparts, and a moat, while the interior offers a romantic reinterpretation of how the castle might have looked. Viollet-le-Duc's imaginative restoration includes grand rooms with painted ceilings, elaborate fireplaces, and intricate stonework, creating a vivid blend of history and artistic vision.
