The National Museum of Denmark is home to a vast collection of cultural artifacts that chronicle Danish history as well as the histories of foreign cultures. Located just a short walk from Copenhagen’s bustling Strøget, the museum features exhibits from all corners of the world, from Greenland to South America. The museum also houses Denmark’s largest collection of ancient Greek and Roman artifacts, as well as treasures from Egypt and the Near East.
A highlight of the museum is its collection of Danish pre-history, where visitors can explore Denmark’s development from the Ice Age to the Viking Age and beyond. Here, you'll find stunning artifacts such as the Gundestrup Cauldron, the Golden Horns of Gallehus (copies on display), and the Trundholm Sun Chariot. The museum also holds significant Viking relics and medieval religious art that reflect Denmark’s spiritual and cultural history.
Step into the stories of the Danish people through the museum’s unique displays on everyday life, royal history, and nation-building from the 16th century through to the modern day. Visitors can also explore exhibits on numismatics, which feature Danish coins from Viking times to the present day, as well as coins from ancient Greece and Rome.
In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum frequently hosts special exhibitions, including the popular Viking exhibition, opened in 2013 by Queen Margrethe II, which has toured internationally. For those interested in Greenland, the museum sponsors SILA - The Greenland Research Center, which supports archaeological and anthropological research in the Arctic.
