The Basilica of St. John, located in Ephesus, is a significant monument in early Christian history. St. John, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and author of 'The Gospel of John,' spent his final years in Ephesus. After Jesus' crucifixion, St. John is believed to have brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus for her safety, where she lived until her death at the age of 101. According to tradition, St. John buried her on Mount Koressos.
Constructed by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century on the burial site of St. John, the basilica was one of the largest structures of its time. The church featured six domes with the Tomb of St. John at its center, supported by twelve columns. The basilica also includes a baptistery dating back to the 4th century, with a door that is a remarkable piece of early Christian architecture.
As Christianity spread in the 7th century, the inhabitants of Ephesus moved to Ayasuluk, where the Basilica of St. John became the Episcopal Church. The site holds immense religious and historical importance, attracting visitors from around the world.
While You're Here: Within the St. John archaeological site, the Ayasuluk Castle is a must-visit. This hill has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic period until the end of the Ottoman era. Visitors can explore the partially restored tower and city walls, as well as the ruins of the Ottoman palace, hamam (Turkish bath), and mosque, offering a comprehensive look at the region's layered history.
The Basilica of St. John provides a profound insight into early Christian history and architecture, making it an essential destination for those interested in religious history and ancient architecture.
