Florence Airport – Getting to the City Center

21 Jan 2026

Florence Peretola Airport sits just about two and a half miles from Florence’s city center. The short distance keeps your arrival simple and fast, and most of the time you can choose between one very straightforward public-transport option and a door-to-door car option.

Public Transport – The Cheapest Way

The Tram line T2 is the only direct public-transport connection from the airport into central Florence. It runs straight to the Santa Maria Novella main station area, so you can continue on foot or connect easily to the rest of the city. The ride takes about 20 minutes; departures are frequent during the day, with reduced service late in the evening. After midnight and until early morning, the tram does not operate, and taxis or private transfers are the only practical options.

Tickets & Prices:
  • Single ticket (90 minutes): €1.70, $2.00*
  • Block of 10 single tickets: €15.50, $16.75*
  • 24-hour ticket: €5.00, $5.80*
  • 48-hour ticket: €8.50, $9.90*
  • 72-hour ticket: €12.00, $14.00*
  • Weekly ticket (7 days): €18.00, $21.00*

*All prices are based on January 2026 rates.

Important note: All public transportation options in Florence are explained in the guide Getting Around Florence – Buses, Trams and Tickets Made Simple.

Taxi – Official and Regulated

Taxis are readily available outside the terminal and operate around the clock. Florence uses a regulated airport taxi system with fixed fares to the city center, which provides clarity and avoids negotiations or surprises. This option works particularly well when you are traveling with luggage or arriving late in the evening or at night, as public transport is no longer operating, and when you prefer a direct, door-to-door ride to your accommodation. Travel times are short due to the airport’s close proximity to the city.

Ride Hailing – Limited Availability

Ride-hailing services play only a minor role at Florence Airport. Availability is inconsistent, and when vehicles are offered, they are often positioned in the premium segment rather than as a low-cost alternative. As a result, ride hailing is not a reliable primary option for airport transfers in Florence.

Shuttle Buses – No Longer Available

Since the introduction of the Tram line T2, classic airport shuttle buses no longer operate between the airport and the city center, as the tram covers the same route more efficiently and at a lower cost.

Private Transfer – Maximum Comfort

Private transfers are booked in advance and offer the highest level of comfort and predictability. A driver meets you at the airport and takes you directly to your accommodation, without waiting times, transfers, or ticket concerns. This option is particularly well suited if you arrive late at night, travel as a family or small group, or simply want a smooth, door-to-door arrival with minimal effort.

Florence keeps airport access refreshingly simple. With a clear public transport option during the day and straightforward car-based alternatives at any hour, choosing how to reach the city is easy. Once this is clear, your arrival in Florence can begin without unnecessary decisions.
