Perched on a rocky peninsula overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, this ancient fortress dates back to the 3rd century BC and has been a coveted settlement throughout history due to its prime location. The castle's extensive city walls stretch for 6.5 kilometers, encompassing an area rich in architectural and historical treasures from various civilizations, including Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods.
One of the castle's most notable features is the Inner Castle, an open-air museum showcasing a diverse array of artifacts. Visitors can explore Byzantine churches and chapels, the Bedesten trade structure, and the Masjid and Tomb named after Akşebe Sultan, a key commander of the castle. The Seljuk Palace, constructed using remnants of older buildings, reveals insights into the daily life of its past inhabitants, complete with houses, baths, and over 400 cisterns that once supplied water to the fortress.
The Red Tower is an iconic highlight of Alanya Castle. Commissioned by Kayqubad I in 1226, this 33-meter tall, octagonal tower is named for the red brick used in its construction.
