Phaselis Archaeological Site is a captivating ancient port city located on a small peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea. Established in the 7th century BC, Phaselis was once the busiest port city in the eastern part of Lycia, thriving on sea trade. Its strategic position and wealth attracted various rulers and invaders over the centuries.

Phaselis is unique for its three harbors: North Harbor, Central Harbor (also known as War Harbor), and South Harbor. These harbors highlight the city's importance in maritime trade, with images of ships even depicted on city coins. The city's strategic value led to its control by Persians, and later, it opened its doors to Alexander the Great, who stayed for a month. The city also experienced pirate rule for a period before becoming a bishopric center during the Byzantine era. However, like many other ancient cities in the region, Phaselis was eventually abandoned in the early 13th century.

One of the first striking sights at Phaselis is the city walls, built along the seashore to protect against pirate attacks. The aqueducts, constructed during the Roman period to bring water from Tahtalı Mountain, are another significant feature. These impressive structures replaced the early wells and cisterns, distributing water throughout the city via an elaborate canal system.

The city's main street, a 25-meter wide avenue paved with smooth stones and featuring a drainage system, connects the city center to the South Harbor. Lined with Roman and Byzantine ruins, this street forms the central axis of Phaselis. Visitors can explore the large and small baths, which offer insights into Roman bathing practices, including heating systems.

The monumental fountain and the theater are also noteworthy, showcasing the grandeur of Phaselis in ancient times. A gateway at the entrance of the South Harbor commemorates a visit by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Although many ruins remain, much of the city has yet to be discovered, including the temple dedicated to Athena, the city's chief goddess.
