Kerameikos is home to Athens' most significant ancient cemetery and the potters' quarter. Established as far back as the 3rd millennium BC, this site later evolved into an organized cemetery from around 1200 BC. It also played a central role in Athens’ historical festivals, such as the Panathenaic procession, and features architectural remains from the construction of the Themistoclean Wall in the 5th century BC. You will find rich archaeological ruins, including the Sacred Gate, Pompeion, and numerous funerary monuments.
The Kerameikos Archaeological Museum, located on-site, is home to a wide collection of artifacts, including sculptures, pottery, and relics from Athens' history, providing a window into the lives of the ancient Athenians.
