The Chasm of Heaven and Hell, located just 25 km east of Silifke, are two of Turkey’s most fascinating natural formations. These sinkholes were created by the collapse of limestone layers over millennia, resulting in deep, cavernous gorges that have captured the imagination of visitors for centuries.
Heaven Sinkhole is larger and accessible via a stone staircase that takes you deep into the earth, passing an ancient monastery along the way. The monastery, built in the 5th century, features frescoes depicting Jesus Christ and his apostles. As you descend further, the sinkhole transforms into a cave, where the sound of an underground river adds to the mystical atmosphere. The recent addition of an elevator provides an alternative for those who prefer not to take the stairs.
The nearby Hell Sinkhole, while not accessible, offers a dramatic view from a glass terrace. According to legend, this is where Zeus temporarily imprisoned Typhon before finally subduing him beneath Mount Etna. The sinkholes are a blend of natural beauty, ancient history, and mythological lore, making them a must-see for any visitor to the region.
